The Pacific Northwest Montessori Association is a catalyst for creating the united common voice required to advocate effectively for Montessori communities. It is our goal to bring together Montessori educators of the Northwest to work in excellence and prosperity; providing meaningful communication to our members and creating a strong Montessori community.


The mission of the Pacific Northwest Montessori Association is to encourage, support and advocate for excellent Montessori education, as well as unite Montessori communities throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Supporting the Arts in a Montessori Classroom

Saturday, January 20 from 8:30 am-4:00 pm (doors open at 8:00 am) in the Roberts Campus Center at Renton Technical College

Julie Karlonas has been sharing art with children and adults for more than 25 years. She holds a Master’s degree in Montessori education, AMS Elementary I and II teaching credentials, and a studio degree in printmaking. She teaches The Creative Arts courses for the Montessori School of Education at Saint Mary’s College of California, The Montessori Teacher Education Center of San Francisco, and The Montessori Teacher Training Center in Shingle Springs. She is the founder of Art Work, a company committed to the research and development of art education and instructional materials for the Montessori classroom. She is also the creator of Sharing Art With Children in the Montessori Way, a comprehensive art curriculum specifically designed to be used in the Montessori classroom. Her materials and methods are being used in Montessori classrooms around the world. In addition, she lectures and conducts teachertraining seminars throughout the United States and Canada, and is a regular presenter for AMS. Julie is also a working artist whose paintings, prints, and drawings have been shown throughout Northern California.

Sarah Werner Andrews is an AMI Director of Training, consultant, examiner, and presenter at local, national, and international conferences. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance, an M.Ed. from Loyola University, AMI Primary and Elementary diplomas and is an Oregon Registry Master Trainer. Sarah began her work in Montessori education in 1987, with many years teaching experience at both the primary and elementary levels, as well as experience in administration. She is currently on the board of directors of the North American Montessori Teachers Association and Montessori Northwest. Sarah is a recipient of the Oregon Montessori Association Susie Huston Memorial Award for Outstanding Teaching, and a former OMA board member.  She and her husband, Dave, have lived in Portland since 1991, and have two wonderful sons, Julian and Evan, who are great reminders to listen, keep learning, and not take life too seriously. Sarah enjoys botany, music, croissants, a great book, historical documentaries, and the AMAZING story of the Bretz Floods.
