Primary Functions of the Learning Specialist:

The Learning Specialist is responsible for assisting students with learning difficulties for grades 2 to 6.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field, plus 4 or more years experience providing learning support in reading; training in Wired For Reading (preferred), Orton-Gillingham, Slingerland, or Lindemood-Bell;

Experience using The Wilson Reading program

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to establish collaborative relationships with teaching staff

Prior experience in creating year-long curriculum for grades 2-6

Punctual and flexible

Professional and academic experience working with children in learning difficulties

Ability to relate to and inspire students in an encouraging and positive and professional manner

Technical skills that support recordkeeping (Google Classroom, Transparent Classroom) and pre-approved parent communication

Experience working with Google office, file sharing or other technologies

Learning Responsibilities:

Knowledge of child growth and development and familiarity with the variety of ways that students may struggle with reading, spelling, and writing;

Knowledge of dyslexia & dysgraphia is critical;

Knowledge of current trends, research, and best practices to support skill development in children who struggle with reading or writing;

Facility in utilizing assessment tools to effectively evaluate a student’s reading and spelling abilities, and to analyze those results to prescribe goals and actions for learning support intervention.

Ability to utilize a variety of teaching strategies both on-line and in-person

Ability to develop a rapport with students that encourages students to take on and stick with challenging work in both small groups (2-5 children) and one-on-one scenarios;

Ability to effectively and sensitively communicate learning difficulties, goals, and intervention plans in conversations with parents;

Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, teachers’ assistants, and parents to support identified interventions in the classroom and at home;

Appreciation of the role of writing as a supportive part of the development of reading and spelling skills is a plus.
